A Bestiary of GSM Cell Phones
While in the market for GSM cell phones, get only one that will really be useful to you. Of course, this ain’t exactly news, yet it’s surprising how so many shoppers actually get stuff that they don’t really find useful. Oddly enough, the wide proliferation of GSM cell phones available on the market today seems to exacerbate the situation: known to our Gallic friends as embarass de riches. In other words, the cornucopia of choices out there seem to confuse people more than anything else.
Those who study consumer psychology are familiar with this phenomenon. Whether it’s GSM cell phones or just about anything else, really, most people will naturally feel more and more anxious when presented with an ever more wider variety of choices. Even though such a finding might sound crazy, there are quite a few good reasons for it. Consider that about half of humanity — those typically called “guys” — hate to shop. Ever wonder why? In a word: instant gratification. Guys just want to “get it over with.” This is the predominant feeling even if the purchase to be made is a simple affair, no matter if it’s as innocuous as getting toiletries or running out for sundry supplies. Imagine how much more annoying it could be when it comes to technology products!
Now, of course, most guys like electronic gadgets — because guys like toys in general. They like objects they can manipulate. But modern technology has lead to an incredible variety of features, with feature-sets that no one but true geeks and nerds would really like to spend time studying…and most guys do not take pride in being geeks.
Yes, then there are the ladies, the female half of the human race. Ladies who typically enjoy shopping — except for when it comes to electronics and the like.
The existence of so many people who do not care about cell phones is an important fact. Is it any wonder, then, that they fall prey so easily to marketing hype? Thus, not knowing the latest from the greatest, they sometimes wind up with gear they not only don’t need, but which may actually hamper their daily mobile communications!
So when in the market for a cell phone, a little introspection of sorts is in order. Just what is it that you wish to do with a handset in the first place? Do you need to send audio-visual material? Must you have an on-board radio? Are games that important? If you absolutely need data capabilities, do you also have to have WiFi or would your carrier’s cellular network be enough?
